Things You Should Ask Your Wedding Photographer

OK your engaged and you have booked your reception venue...now what? Now comes the time to choose your photographer. When choosing your photographer you need to ask a lot of questions since after the wedding your photographs become part of your family history to be looked at for generations to come.

1.Does your photographer have insurance? This is very important and often separates a pro from an amateur. What happens if someone trips over a piece of equipment or a camera fails? Not to mention that most reception venues require the photographer to carry liability insurance. What happens when you arrive at your venue and your photographer is not permitted on the premises because he can't provide proof of insurance?

2.What kind of equipment does the photographer use? Does all of the equipment have a back up? Does he store your images on more than one hard drive in more than one location? Computers, electronics and camera equipment do not fail often but when they do you will be thankful your photographer had secondary equipment and backed up all of your photographs off-site. A professional photographer should be using professional equipment, end of story. Professional photographic gear is essential. Each piece of gear a photographer uses should have at least one back up maybe even two. What if your photographer drops his camera and smashes his lens? Unfortunately, cameras and electronics break. A professional is prepared with a backup.

3.Personality/style. Is your photographer working for you or working to improve his portfolio. Is his style posed, traditional, photo-journalistic or a combination of all three? This is your wedding day and it should be photographed in the way you want it remembered. Make sure you meet your photographer before you book. Remember these are your memories, so make sure you and your photographer share the same vision. Your photographer should be there for you before during and after your wedding day

4.The Contract. Sign a contract with your photographer. This protects you as well as the photographer. Review your contract in person with your photographer line by line. This will give you the peace of mind of knowing exactly what products and services you are receiving and exactly what is expected of you.

5.Your album. Does your package include one? If so, ask about it. Try not to focus solely on how many pages or sides are included. Ask what type of album it is. Is it just a proof album or is it a 12x12 flush mount coffee table book? Ask who the album manufacturer is and if they use archival materials. Do some research on the manufacturer. Are they a top of the line company such as Finao or Graphistudio or is it a press printed book that will not last more than a few years?

6.Budget. Don't price shop for a photographer. Your wedding album should be considered a family heirloom that will be around long after the flowers have died and the food has gone bad. A good photographer spends many thousands of hours learning their trade. It may be worth it to sacrifice certain extras so that you can have the photographer you want.

There are many more questions you can ask your photographer. Hopefully these questions will get you on the right track to finding the best fit for your special day.
