The Wolfman Remake Shows Interesting Promise
The 1940s horror film The Wolfman, which starred Lon Chaney Jr
. is a horror classic. Lon Chaney Jr. was the perfect actor to portray Lawrence Talbot, the unfortunate soul who was bitten by a werewolf only to find himself become one as well. The film is regarded as a horror masterpiece because instead of focusing solely on the creature for its shock factor, it dealt with the emotional trauma caused by the werewolf transformations and how Talbot's village reacts to the attacks. The film packed an emotional punch that was rare in horror films at the time, and to an extent, is still rare in the horror films of today. Well now there is a remake, as many movies are being remade these days, on the horizon, and from the looks of it, this film is aiming to further the punch of its predecessor.
There are several expansions on the original plot. The original film featured Larry as a Prodigal son of sorts. He is returning to take over his father's estate following the death of his brother. His father and he have a seemingly warm relationship. In the remake, Lawrence, has returned home to find the killer of his twin brother. Lawrence and his father also appear to have a much more confrontational relationship, apparently starting when Lawrence's mother died when he was a child. There are also some setting changes. Instead of taking place in the modern day, the remake will take place in the late 1800s. Lawrence is also hunting the murderer of his brother, who is a werewolf. The film also adds a detective character, played by Hugo Weaving.
Speaking of casting, another feature of this film is an ensemble, all star cast, starring Benicio Del Toro as Lawrence, and the great Anthony Hopkins as his father John, Emily Blunt as the fiancee of Lawrence's brother, and the previously mentioned Detective Aberline, played by Hugo weaving.
The film also appears far more atmospheric than the original of which it is based, and many are even saying that it could be a cinematic rarity, as it may very well be a remake of a film that is superior to its original. The more intriguing expansions of the original story are part of what make this a possibility, and leaves the Wolfman as a film to keep your eyes on. The film is set to open in February of 2010.
