The Wedding Speech - How To Make The Perfect Mother Of The Bride Speech

As the mother of the bride you can look forward to a warm reception when you make your speech

. People will want to hear about the bride from the one who knows her best. They know it is an emotional time for you as you are torn between losing your daughter, particularly if you have been close, and wanting her happiness. Other mothers in the audience will understand this and feel for you. Because of this, the audience will overlook any lapses of memory or any hesitation when you give your mother of the bride speech. But that is no reason not to put time into its preparation.

The best way to prepare for your speech is to use these tried and proven steps:

1. Think about what you want to say and start writing it down

2. In the beginning, do not worry too much about the order; just get your thoughts on paper. These will gradually take shape. Do not worry about the format, as you can pretty much say what you like and the order in which you say it.

3. After several rewrites and revisions, you will gradually get you thoughts in order and see your speech emerging.

4. Do not make it more difficult by trying to write a long speech, unless you are a practiced speaker and can hold the audience's attention. Very few people can do this, so limit your speech to about three to five minutes. It can be even shorter than this - you can say a lot in a couple of minutes.

5. Keep going over your speech in your mind so certain phrases will become familiar. These could help you if you become nervous or tongue-tied.

6. Then practice your speech until you know it thoroughly.

7. On the day, use notes as prompts to give you more confidence. If you can, write the notes in the form of headings - your main thoughts - and expand on them when you speak. That way you are less likely to read your speech.

8. Before you get up to talk take a little time to compose yourself by breathing slowly and deeply. When you stand, pause for a few seconds and compose yourself further by looking around the room and smiling.

9. Finally, deliver your speech in a controlled, measured way - and keep smiling.

Remember that the audience is completely with you before you even get up to talk. You are amongst friends and it is the happiest day of your daughter's life. You are there to share her happiness and to enjoy the day. You will enjoy the day more if you feel pleased with the way you have delivered your mother of the bride speech. You can make sure this happens by thorough preparation.

The more thought and preparation you give to your speech, the better it will be. This may be a nuisance, as you will have a lot to do, but it will be worth it to know you have added a strong, positive, happy contribution to your daughter's day. Both you and your daughter will feel pleased and proud.
