The True Meaning of a Wedding
Weddings nowadays can be lavish affairs that cost thousands of dollars. Sometimes it almost seems like a competition, as in who can have the most expensive and opulent wedding? Perhaps it is time to get away from that mindset. Especially in these harsh economic times, with so many people suffering, it might be time to get back to what weddings were once supposed to represent: the simple joining of two people who love one another, done in the presence of the divine as well as friends and family.
Destination weddings in particularly should be frowned upon by most working and middle class families. It puts a hardship on many people who have no desire to travel to wherever the wedding is taking place. And because many people don't broadcast the financial difficulties they might be experiencing, it can be an undue hardship put on them by people who have no idea finances are very tight. Hopefully society will begin to move away from the immediate gratification that has been so prevalent for more than one generation.
What truly lasts from a wedding day? Photographs, memories, and love. All the money spent on extraneous things seems wasted when people stop to consider what is really held onto after the reception has ended and the people have gone home. Whole industries have grown up around weddings, and they pressure families to spend money on things that honestly do not add to the event. How freeing would it be for brides to say "No, I don't need a Roll Royce wedding to prove my love?"
Many brides and their families would certainly be secretly glad if such pressure to conform was not placed on them. Having a wedding at a parent's house, or a beloved sibling's, makes much sense. That is where true love is present, and so much money can be saved when a wedding is done at home. Inviting fewer people makes a lot of sense too, and having a wedding at a house would necessitate that. Of course permits might have to be obtained from local towns or counties, but even with the cost of permits it would still be cheaper overall.
Weddings are meant to be celebrations of love and commitment, done in the eyes of God and family. They are meant to be joyous times where people of all ages can witness the true power of love and relationship. Nothing about a wedding should be trivialized, or done because the bride or her family feel pressured to do it. It will be a beautiful day when a bride can have exactly the wedding she has always wanted.
