The Shifting Trends Of The Toy Business
The toy business is known for its varying trends that can change at the drop of a hat
. Buying trends can be affected by a number of factors and different influences that include marketing and advertising, TV programmes and very importantly word of mouth, especially the word of mouth of young children in the school yard.
It is not uncommon for toys to rise and fall in popularity and this is an occurrence that happens regularly in the toy industry. This will often happen in-line with new television shows and cartoons with large toy manufacturers strategically airing their new shows that go side by side with their new range of toys in order to generate enough buzz and build sufficient excitement within their young fans to make a large enough impact come Christmas time when the demand for toys is at its highest. This needs to be carefully judged so that popularity is still on the rise or at its peak during the busy toy buying period in the lead up to the winter holidays. This is a very competitive market with countless toy manufacturers competing for the top spot each year.
Although this varying trend of toy popularity is seen on a yearly basis it is usually a variation between the same category and style of toy, however in rarer cases the business will see a jump to a whole new market within the toy industry. Over the past five years video games have become more associated with the toy market with some even having the influence that cartoons do over the popularity of toys, but the core toy market has stayed the same with a real solid standing in more traditional toys and although the popularity of video games has increased the toy business has been less electronic and more action figure based. However 2010 has seen a large shift away from more traditional toys such as outdoor toys, board games and action figures towards a more high tech electronic market.
2009's best selling toys included Ben 10 action figures and most popular of all the Zhu Zhu pets, wind up pet hamsters that run around toy hamster cages, both very low tech toys. In 2010 although Ben 10 toys are predicted to sell well again, the style has shifted to a more electronic channel with one of the hotly tipped toys being the Ben alien disc Ultimatrix, a battery powered light emitting, sound making high tech watch. Another much anticipated toy is Stinky the Garbage truck from Matchbox, an interactive electronic toy truck that sings, dances, tells jokes and comes complete with over 100 different sayings and sounds. Stinky reacts to touch, movement and sound making him a very complicated and high tech piece of hardware.
Christmas still remains a number of months away and stats for this year are all based on predictions, so this predicted trend could be all set to change but the slowly growing demand and general interest looks set to catapult the more high tech toys like Stinky the Garbage truck to stardom.
