The Second Hand Caravan Buying Process
For many people, the process of buying a second hand caravan is a fairly foreign one its unlike buying a second hand car or a house
, so how do you know when youre on the right track? Fortunately, simply making the decision to invest in a caravan is the first step in the process, so you are already well on your way to achieving your dreams of the open road. To make things easier, we have outlined the following steps in the buying process for you:
Step 1: Decide where to buy
The next step in the process is to decide where you are going to buy a used caravan from, and you have two choices a dealer or a private seller. Buying through a dealer will help you to rest assured that all the proper safety checks on the van have been completed, but you can expect to pay a hell of a lot more, as the dealers want to make some sort of profit, too. Buying through a private seller, on the other hand, will allow you to haggle a little bit on the price and the opportunity to speak with the owners about their experiences with the van.
Step 2: Organise to inspect the caravan
You can now begin to look at the various second hand caravans on the market, either by visiting a dealers showroom or by arranging an inspection with a private seller. If you are unsure what youre looking for (which most people who are first time buyers will be), ask someone who is more experienced to come along with you to offer a more impartial opinion.
Step 3: Thoroughly inspect the caravan
Once you arrive at the dealership or the home of the private seller, you will be given the opportunity to give the used van a good look over, as you will want to avoid purchasing a lemon at all costs. One of the main problems that you should be looking for is damp, which will present itself in spongy floors, stained surfaces and a musty smell. You should also check that all of the appliances are in good working condition (never take the word of the dealer or seller) and that all of the furniture is intact.
If you are satisfied with the quality and price of the second hand caravan, the final step in the process is to make the transaction with the dealer or private seller. Often, the dealer will require you to sign some paperwork that states the new ownership of the caravan has passed to you and how much you paid for it; some private sellers will do this, whilst others will just take the cash and hand over the keys.
