The Right Baby Carrier For Your Bicycle

Avid cyclists don't just stop loving riding because they have a baby or a toddler to tow around

. That's why many bicycle supply companies have started marketing several options for baby carriers that either attach to or are towed by the parent's bike. But with so many options out there, how can you know how to choose the correct carrier for you?

Many experts will tell you that it's not a good idea to place your child into any bike accessory until they are at least 12 months old. To meet all safety requirements you should always purchase cycling accessories for your child like helmets, hand pads, and other safety equipment.

When children are quite young actually wearing them on your back instead of an installed bike accessory like a cart or a seat is a good idea. This way you know what any sudden movements won't affect their position too much or cause them to fall.

It's suggested by child safety experts that the safest place for a child, when not strapped to your back, is actually in a bike accessory like a cart or a trailer. This way they are safe even when you are not on your bicycle. You being on the ground while they are still on the bike can cause a seriously unbalanced and quite precarious situation. Even in a trailer or cart they will need to wear a helmet.

If you are confident that you and your child can handle a bicycle seat then you should make sure your child fits the height and weight requirements for the specific model you are looking for. Some bike seats will go by age but you really need to look at the physical requirements as your child might be large or small for their age.

You also want to make sure that the seat is compatible with your bike. Some stores will let you try to attach it and find out how it feels. This is always a good idea. You'll want to put your child in the seat to test the safety restraints and belts. Be sure that there is a good place for them to put their feet so they don't get any toes or shoelaces caught in the wheels of your bike!

Safety is the main concern with bike seats and other bike accessories for children. Simply do a little research into the type of seat or trailer that you want and make sure it fits your bike and more importantly your child.
