When it comes to dieting, everybody seems to think that there is a silver bullet out there. If they can only find the right diet, the right combination of advice, the perfect storm of nutritional advice and restrictions, they'll drop all their weight and look beautiful forever.

I'm sure you've met people who always seem to be on some new diet or another, convinced that this time they'll get it right. What I want to demonstrate in today's article is that all these people are approaching weight loss in the wrong way. The hardest part of any diet isn't finding that diet, but rather, maintaining any diet's approach to nutrition and exercise over time.

Think about it. I'm sure you've met people who seem to be losing weight no matter what kind of diet they're on. Whether it's low carb, low fat, whether its tons of exercise or some hormonal regulation thing, everybody who diets seems to lose weight, if only for awhile. If you limit how much you eat and move about more, your body will begin to burn fat and you will lose weight. It really is that simple. If less calories come in than are being burned, your body will grow smaller.

However, the trick seems not to be losing weight, but keeping it off. I'm sure you've heard that vague statistic that 90% of people who lose weight put it right back on after their diet, and that's because they fail to maintain the healthy practices they followed during their diet. They view dieting as a short term remedy, a quick fix to drop ten pounds, and then when they've accomplished their goals they revert to old behavior patterns and quickly regain their weight.

So what is the hardest part of any diet? It's not losing the weight. In fact, that initial weight loss is the easiest part. Anybody can diet for three weeks and lose ten pounds. The hardest part of any diet is keeping that weight off, and that's where everybody's attention should be focused. That's where people should realize the dangers and pit falls lie. If they were only to approach their diets with the confidence that yes, soon they will lose that weight, but really plan on finding a way to keep that weight off, to focus all their energy on staying slender, then people would realize that dieting can be an effective way to become slender and not as frustrating as they feel.
