The Family Room: What Does It Say About Your Family?

Have you ever walked into someone's family room and felt unwelcome

? After that you might want to reconsider what your family room says about you. Take a look around and see if items stick out which are eye sores or if the furniture is mismatching. That might make people seem uncomfortable when entering your family room as well. Take into consideration that the family room is mostly the place where your guests are entertained when they visit.

What Furniture Is Comfortable for Your Family?- More often than not, the family room is where the furniture ends up when it's not quite fit for company. Some pieces may be mismatched and this is all right! You can work around the furniture and still have a beautifully decorated room. Consider new coverings or throws for your favorite sofa. You can also have that "special" recliner reupholstered to give it new life. Bean bags are great for the kids to sit in and they also add to the relaxed feel of the room. Make sure you add some pillows as well.

What's on the Floor?- Does your family room have carpeting or hard wood floors? Either one will work nicely but a floor covering of some sort will usually add warmth and character. A darker colored area rug made of heavier fibers, such as wool, is a great choice. Since most families will have snacks and drinks in this room, you will also want to make sure it is protected against stains by using a product such as Scotchguard. These types of area rugs are often a little more durable than some of the others available. You also may want to consider using two area rugs if the room is quite large. If you change the furniture arrangement, make sure the area run underneath is big enough to set all four corners of your furniture on it.

The Audio and Visual Equipment- This is one are that many people overlook. You want to make sure that the finish of your speakers and the equipment also matches the decor. While you may love your 80's style five foot speakers, they may not work with some of the more modern designs of furniture and accessories.

The Lighting- Recessed lighting is often a great choice for a family room. Its warmth will light up the room, but is not overwhelming. Side table lamps are also a wise choice; however, remember that small children may easily upend one.

Fireplaces are sometimes the focal point in a family room. This will give you a great cozy feeling and will of course be inviting to others.

Make sure to remember that most family rooms is where the entertainment happen or end up heading since most couples have children and the family room is where all the toys are stored. You want the room to feel as if it wasn't just thrown together but ties in with the rest of the decor and style in the home.
