The Dangers Of Breastfeeding With Implants
While less than 1% of women who receive implants experience an impairment in their
ability to breastfeed, those that are affected usually lose the ability permanently. This may not sound like a very big deal to you if you plan on bottle feeding your child anyway, but there are recent studies about the efficacy of formula milk that may make you want to reconsider this option.
How bad is formula milk versus real milk?
Well, a recent study, published in the journal Archives of Disease in Childhood, found that babies who are formula fed are 14 times more likely to have Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, or SIDS, allergies and infections, and other immune system related diseases. The reason for this was the absence of antibodies in formula milk, which not only safeguards newborns against infections, but can actually aid in the development of their own immune system since a mother's antibodies can actually help teach the baby's cells how to handle different pathogens that are, at this stage, alien to the baby's immune system.
However, there is a simple way this can be avoided.
As far as avoiding damaging your milk ducts in the first place, the easiest way to do this is in the manner in which your implants are installed. There are four ways that breast augmentation procedures are done: via periareolar incisions (where the implant is installed though a hole around the nipple, through transaxillary incisions (through the armpit), by inframammary incisions (under the breast), and transumbilically (through the belly button). Out of all of these, periareolar incisions are by far the most dangerous. Cutting around the nipple can result in inadvertently damaging nerves, which can cut off signals to the brain telling it to produce prolactin and oxytocin (enzymes which control the production and ejection of milk), or the milk ducts themselves, making the ejection of milk impossible.
