Yellow Finches have some of the most vibrant colors in the finch family. Known for the vicarious flying patterns and singing they bring color and music to many landscapes. Although these gorgeous birds do not do well in captivity they are beautiful to watch in the wilderness that they help make so colorfully vibrant.
This particular variety tends to be very skittish among humans and do not do well when people try to approach them. As long as there is food available them they will come and enjoy what you have to offer and in return give you hours of enjoyment watching them flit around.
One of the biggest questions that people have concerning Yellow Finches is why they will all of a sudden stop eating from a certain feeder. Many people will question this because the location of the feeder has not been changed and neither has the food. The good news it may have nothing to do with you. If a predator of the birds has been anywhere near the feeders the birds will pick up on it and not want to feed there.
For those who live in an area where it snows and there just happens to be snow on the ground when the birds all of a sudden stop eating there may be tell tale signs. Take a walk near the feeder and pay close attention to the ground and what kind of prints are in the snow. There will of course be small bird prints but are there any other types of foot prints? If you notice any type of prints that look like they come from a larger animal this may be the reason. Yellow Finches will not put themselves in danger.
The best way to try to get the birds back to the feeder is to move it. If you have the feeder near low lying bushes it is best to move it away and hang it up higher. This should help them feel safer. Although they like to nest in the bushes they will not go near the low-lying bushes if they sense a predator or danger of any kind.
If there is a feeder and the Yellow Finches stop eating from it but you truly believe there has been no danger around it may be time to do a cleaning. If the feeder has mold or bugs the birds will not want the seed. Often if the seed is outdated the birds will also stop going to this feeder. This is not surprising considering these little birds seem to be remarkably smart.
The best way to clean the bird feeders is to wash and rinse thoroughly with hot soapy water. After this is done, a good bleaching and then final rinse tends to do the trick. In addition, they also love thistle. This can be mixed with the wild bird food or finch mix you are feeding. Thistle bird feeders are also available and many times look like a tubal structure. Be sure to buy one that is constructed well as some tend to split when the elements take their toll throughout the seasons. By feeding the Yellow Finches you will have birds that add not only color but beautiful song and activity to your yard for hours of enjoyment.
