The Beauty Of St Lucia Uncovered

St Lucia is one of the most beautiful islands in the Caribbean Sea

. Outsiders have been visiting since the Europeans landed in 1492; since then it seems the world can't get enough of its stunning landscapes. The island sits at the confluence of the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean and it has a unique environment. It is divided up into eleven different "quarters" and if you plan a stay in the northern part of the island, booking a room at the luxurious and world-famous Cap Maison St Lucia is a treat for the senses. While you are staying at the Cap Maison St Lucia, venture out and explore the UNESCO World Heritage Site and the Pigeon Island National Park.

UNESCO World Heritage Site

A short drive to the south from the Cap Maison St Lucia will take you along the southwestern edge of the island. Here, there are two volcanic spires (eroded remnants of lava domes) that rise side-by-side from the sea at 770 m and 743 m high respectively. These are the Pitons, part of the Piton Mitan Range. The Pitons rise up from the water in dramatic fashion and are visible from virtually every part of the island. Over the years they have been useful guides to seafarers and they are home to large coral areas with a huge variety of fish and marine life living around them. On the face of the Pitons themselves, the vegetation is mostly tropic moist forest wetlands, and is home to well over 150 plant species (on both Pitons) and some 27 species of birds, rodents, reptiles, bats and amphibians. The Pitons Management Area was inscripted in 2004 and is part of a multi-use management area where there is fishing, farming and some tourism allowed under the watchful eyes of UNESCO.

Pigeon Island National Park

If making it down to the Pitons Management area is a bit too far to entice you to venture out from the Cap Maison St Lucia, then head over to the closer Pigeon Island National Park to spend an afternoon getting back to nature. Pigeon Island National Park is located in the Gros Islet; it was once a free-standing island but was joined to the mainland by artificial means in 1972. While on the island, be sure to take note of the two peaks that dominate the vista and visit the numerous forts and historic sites that date back to the 18th century, when the British used the island to spy on the French. Take time to become acquainted with the history of the Arawaks, the islands indigenous peoples, who were run out around 1000 A.D. And, if you manage to time your visit correctly, you can take part in the St Lucia Jazz Festival, which is held yearly on the island.
