Sloth
The sin: After a hard day at work you are too tired to start cooking a healthy dinner from scratch so out come the ready meals.
Be saintly: If you are busy it is easy to fall into the trap of feeling you have no time to stick to your diet. However, all you need is some simple planning.
"Pre-preparing your meals means you always have healthy food to hand," says nutritionist Caroline Pearce. "Grill several chicken breasts in one go, flavour each differently with your favourite spices and throw into a salad, sandwich or stir-fry.
"Or when you buy bags of nuts and dried fruit, separate into individual portions so you have instant calorie-controlled snacks to throw in your handbag."
Pride
The sin: You are determined to find the willpower to stick to your healthy eating plan alone or it feels like you are taking the easy way out.
Be saintly: Swap the solo diet for a little help from your friends.
"That's because they get all the motivation, inspiration and support they need to keep going.
"It's a fact that the more you go, the more weight you lose. It has been proven that people who attend Weight Watchers meetings lose three times more weight than those who go it alone. The difference is not that people lose more weight each week but that they keep going for longer."
Envy
The sin: You constantly compare your figure to everyone else's, including incredibly honed celebrities.
Be saintly: Sadly, most of us will never look like Kelly Brook and focusing on unattainable goals will simply leave you depressed and more likely to reach for the biscuit tin.
Nutritionist and therapist Mary Strugar says: "Instead of putting yourself under the pressure of getting into a bikini by your summer holiday, be kind to yourself by setting achievable short-term monthly goals where you can really see the benefit. This will keep you motivated for longer."

Anger
The sin: You've fallen off the diet wagon yet again. Now you are beating yourself up for not losing any weight and feeling depressed by your lack of willpower.
Be saintly: Give yourself a break. Everyone slips up from time to time and getting annoyed with yourself only makes matters worse.
"We all know how easy it is to get stressed or angry when we're trying to lose weight,"
"However, what you might not know is that these emotions can make you pile on the pounds. Stress stimulates the hormone cortisol, which can slow down metabolic function and cause insulin levels to increase. Our blood sugar levels follow, making us crave fatty, sugary foods.
"It's far more productive to keep yourself calm and collected and the simplest but most effective way of doing this is by improving your breathing."
Greed
The sin: You just cannot say no. Even if your meals are packed with healthy ingredients, your portions are supersized.
Be saintly: Take a good look at your plate. "Research from the University of Pennsylvania found we can eat up to 25 per cent less without noticing any difference in hunger," says Lyndel Costain.
"It can help to use a smaller plate or to fill half your plate with vegetables and salad and divide the other half between protein and carbohydrates.
"Foods that can help us feel fuller for longer, such as those that are high in protein, fibre and slow-release carbs, can make a real difference when we want to be in more control.
"Make sure to eat mindfully. Sit down, turn the TV off, close your laptop or magazine and pay close attention to what you eat, chewing well and really savouring your food.
