THE BEAUTY OF WHITE KOI
Long ago, before many countries even recognized the koi, these fish were only in one or two colors. But as time passed, when these simple-colored fish joined with the other members of the carp family, we now see this fish as one of the most enchanting family of carp.
Though there are many wonderful colors to be found amongst the varieties of koi fish, it is still the white koi that still stands out as the most sought after among the ogon koi (single color)... which comes as no real surprise when you take a close up look at these fine looking fish!
The Platinum or Purachina ogon is actually a white ogon that becomes silver-hued because of its shimmering attribute. A true platinum ogon is as white as snow from head to tail, including it's fins and they have quite a quite a majestic look about them.
Perhaps because of its majestic beauty, these fine koi specimens were presented as a gift to the Royal Prince Hirohito back in 1914, as their stately and striking appearance coupled with it's graceful movements would have been quite in line with the nobility of Prince Hirohito.
And because of that history, white koi maintain such a sought after status among ogon koi today and even though single color koi also come in gold, silver and very rarely cream. The platinum ogon carries with it a true sense of royalty.
The proper name for such fish in the Japanese naming standards is a white ogon. This means they are a single color all over with no deviation in shade. Choosing a fish color that stands out will help you see what you are keeping. Varieties such as white koi carp are ideal because they contrast well against the muddy water or silty substrate. When these fish move, their scales appear to shine with the same luster as that of a precious metal. Generally ogon have ginrin scales. These are scales which produce a sparkle, quite similar to that of cut diamonds. Generally ogon have ginrin scales. These are scales which produce a sparkle, quite similar to that of cut diamonds. This ginrin sparkle enhances the white color and makes it appear very shiny.
Today, most Platinum Ogon are bred with varieties of the GinRin to create scales that appear even shinier since the scales of the GinRin are quite unique and very different from the common metallic koi. GinRin have sparkling, glittering scales much like cut diamonds instead of the smooth, metallic scales of the Ogon. Crossbreeds between these two types of koi are commonly called GinRin Ogon.
White koi is usually the first choice of many hobbyists. Their color is a great advantage to a pond gone particularly muddy or has silty substrate, for they can still be seen and offer beauty amidst the grime. As muddy and murky as the pond is, white koi provide a striking contrast against the dark water; however, while it is true that koi can survive in low quality water, being common carp descendants, it is not always advisable to leave the pond as it is. Dark water may be an indication not only of dirt, but also of ammonia and nitrogen, chemicals brought about by the koi's excrement which can cause illness and even death.
White Koi is just among the species kois and there sure is more beauty to behold in this fish variety. Koi fish are splendid examples of beauty, but with purpose. They may differ in many ways, particularly in appearance, but all are in some ways, for a beneficial purpose.
