Supporting Weight Loss
Weight loss surgery such as gastric bands, have recently been deemed a quick fix
. However many experts offering weight loss surgery have blamed weight loss clinics who provide a sub standard service. The key to having a successful weight loss procedure is often the down to the support you receive, before and after surgery. Patients are far too often getting a procedure and being sent on their way to supposedly live a fat free live without any other discussion.
It is vital that anyone considering weight loss surgery has support both before and after the procedure. The National Confidential Enquiry into Patient Outcome and Death studied the care given to 300 patients in the NHS and private hospitals in the UK. It results found: (NCEPOD 2011)
Many patients were given insufficient time or information to think about surgery and consent.
Post care was also lacking, with nearly a fifth of patients being readmitted within 6 months of their original surgery.
With gastric weight loss surgery increasing in popularity, it is concerning that patients are not being given enough support. One point this study noted is that only 29% of these patients were given psychological counselling and in a quarter of these the consent forms did not contain the correct information. It is important that anyone considering surgery should be informed of all the risks as well as benefits of surgery. Patients should be given enough time to reflect on their decision. Any issues surrounding why they eat should be looked at, is surgery required, or is there a deeper issue that must be dealt with first.
In many cases people are going for a quick fix but in fact it takes extreme dedication to losing weight and a tremendous amount of will power to do this healthy. It is important that the correct support is being giving to patients before and after surgery. Surgery may ultimately be the choice of the patient. However it can never be the 1st and only choice. A lot of patients may find getting to the root of their eating problem can be extremely beneficial.
Non surgical procedures can often be used as surgical support systems, to make a lifestyle change rather than a quick fix and return to eating the same way as before. The problem with a lot of weight loss programmes is that they focus on helping people to lose weight through diet and exercise but they do not support people with behavioural changes nor teach people how to maintain their weight loss. Hence, people re-gain the weight that they lost and it fuels the yo-yo dieting behaviour that is common in Scotland. That is the reason that I decided to be trained to offer The Counterweight Programme. This programme has proven medical evidence to show that when Counterweight customers set realistic goals, 70% of Counterweight customers lose weight and keep it off. Bethany Aitken, lead of the Counterweight program at Assure Weight Loss. The Counterweight programme ensures that patients are supported in everyway possible to change their lifestyle and eating habits for good.
