Sticking To Your Wedding Day Diet Over Christmas

With Christmas just around the corner the dieter's nightmare of party nibbles

, drinks a-plenty, huge christmas dinners, and the compulsory tin of after dinner chocolates is looming. For most people a slip over the festive period means working a little harder in the gym during January, but for brides-to-be a slip over Christmas could mean the difference between fitting in your dream dress or bursting the seams....

If your dress is already on order, or perhaps youve had your fittings, then youll want to staying the same size to ensure your dress fits perfectly. If you have yet to order a dress you might be trying to diet in order to slim down for your big day. Either day - Christmas throws a spanner in the works! But it is possible to stick to your wedding day diet over the festive period.

Christmas is filled with social occasions and celebrations - all stuffed with the usual buffet food and alcohol that accompanies them. Alcohol is the slimming bride-to-bes number one enemy over Christmas. A large glass of wine can contain anything from 160 to 250 calories, so a you need to be clever about how you much you let yourself drink without ruining off your diet completely. To enjoy a few drinks and not veer too far from your diet just remember these three golden rules:

1. Avoid alcopops - these drinks contain huge amounts of sugar - if you're cutting out sugary treats then these count too! Spirits only have around 55 calories per measure, so are a much wiser choice, but remember to pair these with a diet soft drink - the sugar in some fizzy drinks can be very misleading.

2. Watch your measures - a party at home can lead to much larger measures being poured than if you were in a pub. Be careful of the amount of spirits that end up in your glass, and make sure you dont fill your wine glass to the top!

3. Pace yourself - A party is a time to socialise and catch up with friends. Sipping a drink in between conversation will makes it last much longer and allow you to enjoy something that you would like, instead of a drink that you think would be better for you. A glass of wine doesn't have to be nursed - topping up with soda water is a great way to keep drinking but keep your calories down. Remember to space your alcoholic drinks out with a glass of water in between each one. This will also help to keep you hydrated and lessen your headache the following morning!

The Christmas buffet is filled with all sorts of dieting dangers. A buffet encourages lapse of concentration over portion control as you pick on a little of everything on offer, and the treats on offer are usually high in fat or deep fried. Avoid calorie laden foods such a sausage rolls, pastries, cocktail sausages and the cheese board. Instead, choose finger sandwiches with fillings such as turkey and ham, crudites with low cal dips like salsa, and salads. Set yourself a limit with sweet items - if you are allowing yourself one mince pie, then stick to it! Sit away from the food and distract yourself with conversation.

The last hurdle for the wedding day dieter is the Christmas lunch. Christmas dinner is full of great choices for dieters - just be smart and eat well. The best way to tackle the lunch is to fill half of your plate with vegetables. Potatoes and parsnips are fine, but be careful of roasted spuds, the amount of oil used in cooking them is very bad for your waistline.

You will be busier than usual over Christmas, but dont stop exercising! Try and find the time to keep yourself moving - dont let your whole exercise routine fall by the wayside for a few weeks. Not only will it be harder to pick back up in January, but if you do fall over the dieting wagon with a few too many glasses of wine, hitting the gym will lessen your stress levels about fitting into your dream dress.

It might take a little self control to stay true to your diet over Christmas, but come your next dress fitting, you'll be so pleased you decided to have a calorie controlled Christmas.
