Ferrara is a beautiful city in Italy north of Bologna and a popular tourist spot

No one is sure when people first settled in Ferrara but it does have a rich history and is noted for being ruled by the Este family from 1208 to 1598, their influence is evident throughout the city with many monuments and artefacts that are still around today. It was because of the Estes family that Ferrara became so well known for the arts as they commissioned great artists such as Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Titian, and Petrarch, among others. However, due to the Estes not managing to produce a male heir Ferrara was claimed by the Pope which caused the city to decline for many decades before being re awakened in the 19th Century. The decline took its toll on the city but many of the great art were saved and has been restored ready for you to come and enjoy.
Ferrara is surrounded by 9 kilometres of city walls which the more athletic visitors walk or cycle around to view the stunning city and its surroundings. Ferrara also has plenty of churches to visit with a strong religious history the churches and cathedral have been well looked after and preserved and even the least religious of visitors will be humbled by their stunning architecture and art.
