Some Wedding Traditions Change But Never Fade Away
Some couples will give wedding favors that depict the popular traditions of something old
, something new, something borrowed, something blue, put a sixpence in her shoe. These unique wedding favors bring to mind the time honored traditions and their meaning in today's modern weddings. One of a father's worst fears is that his little girl will get married and then her husband will whisk her off somewhere that would make it difficult or impossible for him to see her again. This very often happens as a new couples future unfolds and takes them places they did not expect to go. A new and rewarding job might open up on the other side of the country or the husband might be in the military. For this reason, the symbol of something old comes into play during the wedding as the new wife makes a promise not to severe ties with her family by wearing an old family heirloom.
The popular choice used to be the wedding dress, which was handed down from mother to daughter for several generations. This tradition is not as popular as it used to be. Many young women want a new dress and part of the fun of planning their wedding is shopping for one. A piece of old jewelry or a single article of clothing is now the preferred choice for the tradition of something old.
Traditions such as these often change ever so slightly but never really fade away. While the wedding dress used to be the choice for the old item symbolizing continued family ties, now it is usually the chosen item for something new. Something new symbolizes a wish for a successful marriage and blessing. This is very important in these times where divorce rates soar and marriages are more for convenience that for any other reason. The need for luck, good fortune, and success is higher now than ever before.
The promise of friends and family to help and support the bride whenever it is needed comes from something borrowed. The symbol of something borrowed is a promise of love and support as family and friends vow to be there in the couple's time of need should one ever arise. It is a beautiful gesture of love and strengthens the tradition of something old. It even expands it to include close friends. The relationships that we leave behind should never be broken. In fact, the union of two people should actually strengthen ties with friends and family and bring the new spouse closer into the circle of love.
Many years ago, in biblical times, the color blue was a symbol of purity and faithfulness, much as the color white is today. The bride wears something blue, like a garter or other small article of clothing to denote her pure love for her husband and the faithfulness and loyalty that she will bring into their marriage. Something blue is loyalty and the respect for the other's feelings by being faith and pure only to each other. It is a beautiful and touching commitment to each other.
Many people do not realize that there is a fifth element to these traditions. They only know about something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue. However, tradition goes on to include a sixpence inside the left shoe of the bride. This is family and friends wish for the bride (and groom) to have success and happiness. In current tradition, the bride would place a dime or penny inside her left shoe. Many brides temp fate as their shoes are already uncomfortable and they do not want to put an irritating coin in them. Unfortunately, writing an I.O.U. on a piece of paper and slipping it into the shoe will not work.
