You're getting married and you want to make sure you can fit into your wedding dress

You've just booked your holidays and you want to look good on the beach

You've come out of a rotten relationship and you want to create a new you

You're simply just fed-up with wearing loose shapeless clothes and you want to wear the latest fashions

A big social event is happening in the near future and you want to drop a few pounds to look good

What most of these have in common is they are all societal reasons - ie it's about looking good amongst your peer group; it's about not having people point and stare at you negatively or worse just ignore you in an important social setting; it's about wanting to be a beautiful peacock strutting your stuff for a brief moment in time. The other thing all these reasons have in common is that they are all short-term goals.

Short term goals ? So what does that mean?

For most people it means going on a crash diet and maybe hitting the gym like a maniac. After a couple of exhausting weeks feeling hungry and irritable it means giving up the diet and feeling disillusioned because you only lost 1 or 2 pounds of weight, if that. It means going back to your usual eating habits and then not only regaining the couple of pounds lost but adding a few more to keep them company. Sound familiar?

So what's the solution then?

We already know the answer to that. Eat less, move more. Sounds simple doesn't it?

Yet obsesity is fast overtaking smoking cigarettes as the number one killer of people in America today.

With cheap fast food 'restuarants' on virtually every corner, cheap convenience food and ready meals loaded with E numbers, excess salt and other additivesin every supermarket and healthy or organic food increasing in price every other week, is it any wonder that it's a constant battle to keep the bulge down?

The truth is to succeed in the long term and keep the weight offrequires an enormous amount of discipline and focus. Eating habits need to be changed on a gradual basis. You cannot expect to make drastic changes in lifestyle and food choices overnight.

Even with the various dietary aids on the market, it is best to lower your expectations to a loss of 1 or 2 pounds of fat a week. If you happen to lose 5 pounds in one week, see that as a bonus not as a guaranteed certainty that this will happen every week.
