Showgirls, Basic Instinct and the real Saint Patrick
Fifteen hundred years ago a teenage slave was offering prayers to heaven over a hundred times a day. It wasn't freedom that he sought as much as the presence of God.
One day he heard a divine voice call out, "Ship is ready." Patrick escaped the clutches of his slave master and traveled seventy miles to the coast. When he reached the dock he found a boat waiting to take him home to Britain.
The following years were filled with a desperate pursuit of God in which he sought to know one thing, "Christ ever with me."
Then one day the voice he once heard on an Irish hillside returned in a vision in which the people of Ireland begged him to return to their country. For Saint Patrick, it was a chance to return to the land of his captors and tell them about the love of God.
Using a shamrock to illustrate the mystery of the Trinity, he and his followers would cross the country and witness entire kingdoms convert upon hearing him preach the gospel. His compassion and passionate faith literally changed the face of a nation.
Fast forward to the 21st century. Scriptwriter Joe Eszterhas has become wealthy writing scripts he defined as "filled with sex, violence, and hatred." His most notable works include Basic Instinct and Showgirls.
Eszterhas is familiar with violence. Having grown up poor in Hungary, he once almost killed another kid with a baseball bat. Later as an adult he became a reporter and covered violent crimes and interviewed serial killers, including Charles Manson.
Then one day his world came crashing down when he was diagnosed with throat cancer, the result of a two pack a day habit. Surgery left him unable to speak so he carried a chalk board to communicate with his wife and four kids.
In the midst of it all on a hot summer day alone on the sidewalk he sat down and began to weep.
He would share, "I'm crying so hard that I see the tears hit the cement. I put my head down and I hear a voice that says, Please God, help me.' But I can't speak, but I hear this voice, and I realize I'm praying."
There in the solitude of the moment, just as Saint Patrick experienced on a hillside in Ireland hundreds of years earlier, he found himself immersed in the healing presence of God.
Eventually his voice returned, but the anger, hate and fear were long gone, replaced with love and peacefulness. Since that moment almost ten years ago one of his greatest joys is to participate in worship by carrying the cross of Christ through the gathered crowd. As he shares, "Carrying the cross is a great honor."
So wherever you find yourself today, on a hillside or a harbor, on a sidewalk or a sanctuary, alone or in a crowd, know that there is one who is searching for you.
You only need listen for his voice. His calling on your life is a great honor. Simply be ready to board the ship he sends your way. Then prepare to be amazed at where he carries you.
