Secrets to Goal Setting and Personal Development

People achieve success when they make well-timed, clear-headed decisions. In the main, we are usually pretty sure about the kind of person we should be, but it's the rare few who bother to make this a reality. One of the things you can do to bring the 'real' you into being is to set goals. Knowing you have a goal gives your life purpose. You may already have a rough idea of a goal you would like to achieve. If this is the case, then now is the time to make it something specific. For example, if you are looking to lose weight don't just say "I really should lose weight soon". Be precise. "I will lose 20 pounds by June 1st" is far better. Your brain prefers precise instructions. Suppose your boss gave you a rather vague instruction like "meet a guy in the parking lot", you'd want to know what he looked like, what time to meet him, what you are to do once you've met him and so on.. The more detail you can attach to a goal the better, as this gives the brain a very clear indication of what is needed. A measure of self awareness is essential in critical decision making. As an example, you wouldn't expect your automobile to turn a corner if you didn't have your hands on the steering wheel, would you? Likewise if you don't have your hands on the steering wheel of your life, how can you steer yourself in the right direction? Like any excess though, too much self awareness is not beneficial. It can cause us to be too fearful of the consequence of taking action. Self awareness is the key to taking the right steps. As long as we are self-assured and don't lie to ourselves, then we will naturally act in a way that gives equal weight to the facts at our disposal and our need to make things happen. Rash decisions will be a thing of the past. Instead, your actions will be sound and effective. Making a sudden, impetuous decision can mean tasting defeat instead of success. Being self aware means being aware of your own particular talents and abilities. With proper use of this awareness comes confidence. Be sure not to be over-confident, though. When setting a goal, ensure it is neither too easy nor too difficult to achieve but tests you sufficiently so that you have that deep inner satisfaction that comes with achieving it. A word about ignorance. The worst kind of ignorance is that which is self-induced, and it is a sure-fire way of preventing your success. Self-induced ignorance occurs when you refuse to look for alternative ways of doing things. Solving a problem in a different manner is what makes you innovative and competitive. Take a look around. How many different cleaning products are there to do the same job? How many options does a quarterback have to help his team score a touchdown? So, if you combine self awareness with keeping an open mind, you are more likely to set worthwhile goals and achieve them. Some character traits need to be kept a firm grip on so they don't sabotage your efforts. Chief among these is procrastination. It may be all too easy to put off doing something till later, but all you're doing is delaying your success. Understand that repeating a behavior turns it into a habit which then becomes difficult to change. This can have an extremely detrimental effect on your attitude. It is vital that you take control of your life to ensure ongoing success. The kind of upbringing you had is irrelevant. Saying 'there was nothing I could do about it' is an excuse used far to often by those seeking to wash their hands of responsibility. You might think that excuses like this get you off the hook, but they are simply self-defeating and just lead you to accept whatever life throws at you, rather than getting off your backside and taking some sort of positive action. Simply put, we are happy to take advantage of good situations but shirk away when faced with adversity or something that requires effort. Yes, this seems rather obvious but those who are most successful welcome a challenge because they know that overcoming it breeds character and confidence. You too can use the personal development tips above to become like them. About the Author:
