Driving Tour

Part driving and part walking defines the novelty of this tour and makes it perfect for the very young and the very old alike. Grandparents and grandchildren can enjoy most of the Preserve from the comfort and safety of the car. This mitigates a lot of the "mobility problems" common to both ages.

Not only that, you may feel safer watching the alligators from the security of your automobile, if they tend to make you nervous. However, when it comes to the T-Rex's we make no guarantees :).

If you do decide to venture out, there is a beautiful island-park about half way into the preserve. You can access it from several walking bridges. Be sure to pack a lunch and take advantage of the serene and lovely picnic area.

Walking Tour

On the island you're relating to the original environment up close and personal. You might even spot some Alligators, but keep a safe distance because they're faster than they look. You definitely don't want to let the children wander. This is a family affair, with lots of plants and animals to enjoy. You can even fish if you remembered your pole.

Back on the motor trail there are other opportunities to park and head north into the wetlands on foot. There are well-defined paths of course that carry you over and through the swamp on boardwalks, old rice dykes, and abandoned logging trails. Fish Island Trail cuts through the center of it all, bisecting the Preserve from east to west.

The ancient Indian Shell Ring is within easy walking distance of the picnic area, while Harbor Town and the Stoney-Baynard ruins are not much farther by car. Flora, wildflowers and wildlife, small birds and butterflies and dragonflies are everywhere along the way. But you risk being carried off by a herd of mosquitoes if you forget your bug spray. Don't leave home without it.

There is an enlightened form of environmentalism pervading the culture of Hilton Head Island. Unlike so much of the movement which views man as an invader to be isolated from the creation, here there is integration and harmony. Hilton Head Island is like a garden, whose human inhabitants cultivate and enjoy it at the same time they strive to preserve it for future generations. This was the pattern established by developer Charles Fraser as "modern" Hilton Head was being born.

Fraser set aside 605 acres for the Sea Pines Preserve and gave it its distinctive design. The imprint of his unique environmental legacy is seen all over the Island. Who needs Hawaii, when we've got Hilton Head?
