They will assume that because you are alone it means that you are available. The attention is usually harmless, but it can be annoying. The best way to deal with it is to remain calm, avoid eye contact, and make it clear that you are not interested. If he is being overly friendly, you should be overly formal.
Try not to smile at men that you dont know even when registering at the hotel or ordering food. Although you are likely in the habit of doing it because in your own country it is considered polite, some men in Turkey might take it the wrong way and assume you are interested in them. Eye contact and smiling is not a normal interaction for strangers in Turkey.
Dont make the unwanted attention worse by wearing tight sleeveless tops and sexy shorts! Wearing revealing clothing is a huge mistake in Turkey because not only is it disrespectful to the more conservative culture, but it will also get you a lot of unwanted stares and inappropriate comments from creepy men. In the large cities such as Istanbul the dress code is more modern but make sure to bring modest clothing with you especially if you plan to visit rural areas or traditional neighbourhoods.
When you go out for a meal, dont be surprised if you the only woman in the restaurant. If you are uncomfortable, you can always look for a restaurant with an "aile salonu" which means "family salon" and is where the women, couples, and families will be dining.
Just like in any big city, there are many con men in the street. If someone tries to talk to you or sell you something, just ignore him and keep on walking.
If you are a solo traveller, avoid going out late at night on your own. Take a taxi instead of walking on the dark streets. If you are going out to enjoy the nightlife, stick together with a mixed group of other travellers that you have met on your Turkey holidays.
Remember that most Turkish men are very polite towards women, and that violent crime and rape are less common in Turkey than in many developed Western countries. As long as you adjust your behaviours during your Turkey holidays and observe the local norms you should not have any trouble.
