Romance and adventure is a tweed suit
Most suits today are just meant to take you to board meetings and perhaps a night on the town
. The fabric is lightweight and smooth, and if you sit on a concrete park bench, there is often the fear that your super 100s wool will catch and tear. It is not meant for travel, it is not meant for being out of doors. It is meant for leather chairs and sitting behind a computer screen until the clock says it is time to head home. When you walk down the street and people see you in your navy blue super 100s suit they tend to wonder what office you are coming from. This is all well and good, but when it comes to dressing well and traveling, and when you have the spirit of adventure in your hearts well a super 100s fabric just won't do.
I've often been told I abuse my suits when I travel (mostly by my tailor), and it's true. I take them through more rigors than most people think a suit could be able to handle. I do this because, well to me, a travel suit is meant to be wearable for just about anything. Regardless of whether it's a meeting with a client at his office, or just jumping on a 24-hour flight to Tokyo. To me, a travel suit is something that has to last throughout my day or through two or three days straight with just a change of shirts and ties to keep me looking fresh when all I've packed is a small bag for a spur of the moment trip. The suit should hold up to more rigors than sitting at a desk until I end up gaining or losing too much weight for the suit to fit.
And here is where tweed comes in. Unlike your traditional blue super 100s jacket and pants, the tweed suit can actually be slept in at an airport and still look brand new the next morning. It can be shoved into a bag without being folded, and if it is well fitted to you, wrinkling and creases will fade away in moments. You don't worry about tweed getting dirty as you can literally take a sponge and wipe away any grime that may get on you from going through those catacombs in Paris. It's okay in the boardroom and perfect for the out of doors. But on top of all of that the most important thing that comes with owning a tweed travel suit is the romance that is something that can't be captured by a thin super 100s wool meant for a boardroom. Tweed says you are going somewhere. You see it in vintage movies on the cruise ship, the train and the bus heading across the country. It's a tougher material, a material that can take a tumble and look completely unscathed. Today the tweed suit has fallen away from being a wardrobe staple, but when it comes to dressing up for a voyage, nothing has the mystique of a well-tailored tweed suit.
So the next time you get a chance, take a good long look at your closet. I'm sure you have a few navy blue super 100s suits, and perhaps a charcoal gray. You maybe even have that sports jacket that gets worn now and again. But if you don't have a tweed travel suit, something that can take you to a game of bocce in the morning then to shopping at the Champs-Elysees to finally dinner on the Eiffel tower. Then your wardrobe is in dire need of a little romance called a tweed suit.
