Romance Is Dead - Valentine's Day Is a Commercial Charade

Valentine's Day has become a huge fixture in the calendar of the western world. But is it now an ideological day that is based on values that are out of this world. Some believe it has become a day where prices of flowers double, availability at hotels and restaurants becomes a nightmare and it is another reason to have an argument.

We are currently in a global recession, and many of us are worse off than we were five years ago. Life is becoming harder and Valentine's Day is considered to be another nuisance in our lives that gives our other halves another reason to moan. A commercial windfall is what the day is now considered as, a day when we do not pay the true price of something, but we instead pay over the odds for everything.

Everywhere is more busy, and overpriced. And there is more pressure for everyone to perform better and be more of a loving boyfriend or husband because at the end of the day it comes down to the efforts the guy has put into the day. The thoughtfulness of their present or date, and the place they take their girlfriend are all considered. There are no shortcuts for guys on Valentine's Day instead there are only mines to trip over.

Idealists believe Valentine's Day is a way in which you celebrate and demonstrate your love for one another. And that whatever the price of the day, you owe it to each other to make that one day special. Life is too short according to these people and to make time for each other just one day out of the year is the least that we can do.

These are the same people who will sit at home on Valentine's Day to avoid the overcrowding and overpricing. Many believe also that Valentine's Day has become a day that symbolizes the problems in someone's life. For example many women are now considering the day to just be a reminder of the relationship that they don't have. The prospect of facing another year alone is something they can't bear.

This encourages them to go out on that particular night, and find someone random to make themselves feel better. So I ask the question is Valentine's Day a blissful pure celebration of love, or a commercial opportunity that takes money out of our pockets and causes problems in our relationships?
