Revisiting Wedding Customs And Traditions
Wedding is a special event that allows the bride and the groom to celebrate their love
, commitment and dedication to each other. Wedding also reflect the bride and grooms personalities because it enables them to express their individuality. Most wedding also incorporate traditions and customs from across the marital divide.
Wedding etiquette is important because it shows that the bride and groom are serious and committed to the success of their wedding and subsequently marriage. Bride and groom are always free to incorporate customs and traditions from their culture and family.
The bridal couple is also free to leave out wedding etiquette but be reminded that some wedding traditions are old and should be followed at all costs.
Wedding Dresses
The bridal gown is always the center of attention in weddings; it also happens to be white by tradition, white as the color of wedding gowns became famous when the Queen Victoria wore one on the day of her wedding in the 1840. White was also the Greek color of Joy and Roman brides are said to have worn white as a way of paying tribute to the god of fertility.
No wonder an old English rhyme goes like "Get married in white, you have chosen right".
The other old adage respected by the brides all over goes like, "something old, new, borrowed, blue and silver sixpence in her shoe". Something old in the saying refers to the rite of passage with a connection to the past and hopes of future success. Borrowing something is shown as bringing good luck, while the color blue represents love, purity and fidelity. The sixpence is a symbol of future wealth.
The Bride
According to tradition, the bride stands in the grooms left side when taking her vows. Reason being most people are right handed and this orientation allows the groom to protect his bride from danger posed by marauders.
Traditionally the brides adorns a bouquet of flowers, alternatively herbs as a symbol of good luck. This supposedly protects her from spirits that bring bad luck. Wedding attendants traditionally function as guards of the bride. More attendants means more protection for the bride.
The Groom
The grooms attire corresponds to the time of day that the wedding takes place. If the wedding takes place latter in the day, then the grooms dress is more formal. For an evening wedding, a formal black coat, white waistcoat and a bow tie are expected.
Wedding Ceremony
The wedding procession of a formal wedding begins with ushers walking down the aisle in pair. They are followed by bridesmaids in pairs, the maid and matron of honor, ring bearer, flower girls and finally the father of the bride.
Wedding Reception
The feast of wine and food that follows the wedding ceremony is a very old wedding tradition that is meant to celebrate the union. The Brides father according to tradition is the one responsible for the expense regarding this arrangement.
