Who is a parenting coordinator?
Many states use a parenting coordinator to solve child custody and visitation issues. In most cases it will be a professional psychologist or lawyer. This person will meet the parents regularly, answer their questions, receive complaints and make suggestions to both the parents. Most parenting coordinators will expect the parents to accept their suggestions. In some cases, it can be used against the parent if they refuse to accept the coordinators suggestions.
What states have a law for parenting coordinators?
10 states in the US have a law for parenting coordinators as of May 2011. These states are Colorado, Idaho, Louisiana, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Massachusetts and Florida. Most of these states mention that the court may order a parenting plan to the parents. The coordinators may not be able to change this plan. He/she may only be able to make minor changes to the plan.
Can a parental coordination be conducted in the absence of a lawyer?
A parent may be able to file a petition in court to sort out custody and visitation issues. In most cases, a lawyer may not be required if the parents agree to give their time and work towards sorting the issues. However, with custody and visitation, it is always better to have a lawyer.
Can a parenting coordinator suggest about the childs therapist to the father if he has never met the therapist?
The therapists may be allowed to testify in court regarding the parents and childs behavior. However, the other parent may state that the therapists opinion is a biased one.
What rights do parenting coordinators have?
Parenting coordinators may have a number of rights. Some of them are as follows:
Telling the parents where they can go and cannot go while visiting the child and telling them about what activities may be allowed.
Telling parents about what topics they cannot talk about in front of the child
Taking complaints from the parents about one another and taking decisions to be followed by both of them
When the parents are not in agreement, taking decisions about a non urgent medical condition of the child.

They can also request the court to appoint a new parenting coordinator but to do so; they will have to give a valid reason to remove the current coordinator.
