Purposeful Architecture Makes Special Needs Housing A Priority

Cathy Purple Cherry is not just a Special Needs Housing Architect and Founder of

Purposeful Architecture, she is also the mother of an adult son on the Autism spectrum and the sibling of a Down Syndrome brother. She is passionate about designing successful environments for individuals with special needs including Autism and is leading this charge across the country. She brings to all Purposeful Architecture projects a unique sensitivity to the world of special needs and fully understands the methods, programs and environments that most successfully support this incredible group of individuals.

At the age of 12, she knew she wanted to be an architect. By the time she was a teenager, she knew she would adopt a child. While in her late thirties she had accomplished both of these goals and through the experiences brought on by these accomplishments she gained a new goal: to design buildings and spaces for individuals with special needs. Thus, Purposeful Architecture was born.

Purposeful Architecture, a studio of Purple Cherry Architects, was created to embrace the design work of organizations supporting individuals with special needs. Born from a desire to create nurturing environments for adults and children with mental and physical challenges, Purposeful Architecture supports projects that serve those in need of support. The same tenacity that propels Cathy to vocally and forcefully advocate for her eldest child benefits their clients. There are core needs for individuals with challenges. Through design, Purposeful Architecture can provide for those needs in a wonderfully inspiring way through the use of light, color, shape, spatial relationships and so on.

Cathy Purple Cherrys initial passion for special needs housing came at a time when her architectural firm, Purple Cherry Architects, had very little experience in the commercial sector or designing with special needs in mind. However, the call for proposals for a $4.5 million outpatient facility for adults with mental health disorders tugged strongly on Cathys heart strings and she knew that it was something she had to pursue. Without the expertise of her competitors or a single PowerPoint slide she was awarded the job due to her personal conviction and life experiences. The resulting project is Arundel Lodge, a 28,000-square-foot, two-story facility completed in 2005 that today provides rehabilitation services to more than 140 men and women with psychiatric disabilities. This incredible feat could only have been completed as a result of the immense passion Cathy Purple Cherry has for architecture and its ability to improve the lives of those that live with disabilities.

Cathy Purple Cherrys recent work in special needs housing has included the design of centers that provide services and care to adults with developmental disabilities, special needs schools, and the headquarters for a group that offers transportation and vocational training to adults with disabilities. Purple Cherry Architects continues to practice a variety of design work with a specialty in non-profit projects, high-end residential waterfront homes and restaurant designs. However, all of their clients are aware of their passion for great causes and their desire to create functional, nurturing spaces for people to live, work and play.
