Price and plastic surgery – Do you get what you pay for?

Price and plastic surgery Do you get what you pay for

?

Price is a touchy subject. Cosmetic surgery, by its very nature, is not cheap. The amount of equipment, the amount of extensive skilled labor, and the amount of time it takes both in consultation, surgery and post-operative care, all add up. Patients will note if they interview several surgeons, that there are major variations in fee schedules. This does not mean that the most expensive is the best, nor does it mean that the cheapest is the worst. However, there is an old adage, you get what you pay for. In this case, it's fairly true. My personal belief is that the cheapest surgeon may be someone who is either cutting corners or doing the surgery in such a rapid manner as to skip important steps that are crucial to consistency and quality. Another personal belief of mine, is that the most expensive surgeon, may be the surgeon who likes the grandest lifestyle, or has the best publicity agent, or otherwise has done the best job of marketing himself. So, being expensive does not necessarily mean that this surgeon is the best. It only means he is the most expensive.

But there is no free lunch. So, as a general rule, I would say, look to the middle or middle high end prices if you're looking for one of the strongest surgeons. There are no short cuts for having the best help, for using the best facilities, and for taking the additional time to be meticulous and precise. There are some surgeons who are definitely faster than others, and that's okay. But, this speed should never come at the cost of skipping any steps that might influence the optimal outcome of the surgery. An example of this is in breast surgery. During breast surgery, especially with certain types of augmentations and breast lifts, I would sit the patient up multiple times, even though they were asleep, and my nurses and I would gather at the foot of the bed to make sure that the size, shape, and symmetry of each side was ideal. This sometimes required sitting the patient up a half dozen times during the course of the operation. This probably added 20-30 minutes to the operation, but is more than made up for, by being able to truly determine how the breast would sit, where to place the nipple in precisely the right location, and to make sure the size and pocket were ideal and identical. "You cannot tell this if the patient is supine (lying on their back)" - states Dr. David Wolf, view more at his plastic surgerywebsite.

After you have interviewed a particular plastic surgeon, another way to make sure that he is properly qualified is to call the nearest major hospital with which this plastic surgeon is affiliated. The medical office staff will tell you if this physician has privileges to do the surgery you are considering in the hospital. If he does not have privileges to do the surgery in the hospital, this tells you the hospital does not feel, for whatever reason, that this surgeon has not been qualified to perform the surgery. I personally believe that it's very important that a surgeon have the hospital qualifications to perform any surgery that he is proposing to perform on a patient in an outpatient setting. Certainly, in my 25 years of practice, I never once performed a surgery in my office in my own operating suites, that I was not cleared to do at the hospital that I was most closely affiliated with.

I believe in order to find the right plastic surgeon, one ought to see 3 or 4 plastic surgeons that your research has turned up as being qualified to perform the surgery. One would never buy the first house that you look at, and this is far more important than buying a house. This leaves the patient armed with information on how to proceed best as well as the pricing of various surgeons. It's likely that in the end you'll get what you pay for.
