Prenatal Exercise - Bathing A Newborn Baby

Do you prefer your baby handed to you immediately after the birth or should he be cleaned first

? In current years, most babies were wiped down with a towel instantly after birth before mum or dad got a chance to hold them. These days, choice is the keyword! It is your choice.

Research reveals that the greasy film covering your baby, vernix, is a wonderful source of moisture for your baby's delicate skin. And if you do not wipe it off, it is reabsorbed. So your infant will be less likely to develop dry skin patches. Pre-term infants have a lot more of this protective layer than full-term babies.

Inside the womb, your baby is immersed in amniotic fluid, so vernix is absolutely required for providing waterproof protection. Following birth, however, mother nature might require a helping hand!

Returning home could be overwhelming for new parents. Giving infant his first bath could be frightening!

Your baby does not require a special bath even though numerous parents are well tooled up for the new arrival. A clean sink or the big bath will be enough!

Probably the primary worry for parents is getting the water temperature correct. After making sure you have all baby's bits and bobs at hand, for example a changing mat, towel, fresh nappy, vest and clean clothes, position the infant in a safe location.

Run cold water into the bath first.

Top it up with hot water. Swirl the water all across to avoid hot spots.

Dip your elbow into the water to verify the temperature. It ought to be lukewarm. As the skin on your elbow is really sensitive, it's a reliable way to test the water.

If you want, you can include a little moisturising, hypoallergenic, baby bubble bath. Swirl it around with your fingers. Young infants don't require bubbles to play with!

Undress and wrap infant in a warm towel. Holding him on the bath, cup some bath water in your free hand and lightly run it over his head. Shampoo is not required for really tiny infants since it can irritate their scalp.

Dry the baby's head thoroughly. Babies lose lots of heat through their heads. Wet heads shed much more heat.

Putting baby's neck in the crook of your elbow, and your hand holding the back of one of his legs, gently lower him into the water. (TIP If you are right-handed, it is easier to place infant's neck in the crook of your left elbow. Holding his left leg using your left hand, wash him with your right hand. The reverse is the instance if you are left-handed.)

Some infants don't like being bathed but many really enjoy it. He might become so relaxed that he falls asleep!

Cupping some water in your free hand carefully trickle it through his body. You do not require to rub or scrub as infants do not get dirty. They just require to be freshened up!

Be careful becausehe will get very slippery once he is wet!

Only keep the baby in the bath for a while because he will get cold fast and in no way leave your baby unwatched in the bath for even the shortest space of time.

Lift him out and wrap him up in his warm towel.

Rapidly dry him and put a fresh nappy on him just before he has any small accidents!

Lastly, give him a large cuddle and dress him quickly..

And there you have it - baby's very first bath!
