Positive Points To Know About Pregnancy

"You are pregnant." These three life-changing words conjure a mixture of emotions

. Some feel elated as they may have been trying for a long time, some happy at their surprise, others apprehensive about what lies ahead, some nervous about the quality of parent they will make and some powerless as it all feels out of their control. All these natural responses, however, should not be overshadowed by the fact that a miracle has occurred. It is true to say that some challenges may be met throughout this exciting time, but being informed about what lies ahead is one way to alleviate your fears.

Pregnancy is a term that refers to the 40-week period that a woman carries a developing fertilised egg implanted in her uterus. As each pregnancy is unique it may go longer or shorter and involve more than one offspring. Similarly, the signs of being pregnant are also different from individual to individual, but commonly include: a missed period, a feeling of nausea, a lack of energy, an unexplained change in taste, sore and enlarged breasts, an increased need to empty the bladder, spotting and cramping, mood swings, changing of the colour of the area around the nipple and a sudden desire to have certain foods. Pregnancy can only be confirmed through a blood or urine test that looks for changes in human chorionic gonadotropin hormone levels.

A pregnancy can be split into three time periods, of three months, known as trimesters. Trimester one commences from the moment of conception and continues until 12 weeks. It is during this stage that most of the hormone-duced signs associated with pregnancy are evident. The baby will start as an embryo but will change to a fetus at the end of week eight. A discussion with your doctor about vitamins to take throughout your pregnancy, if you are not already on them, is highly recommended.

The second trimester, from week 13 until week 28, is a time of fast development and movement of the fetus. The feelings of sickness and tiredness start to lessen throughout this stage. Hormone level changes here create a desire to "nest", that is, get things ready for the arrival of the little one. People also tend to notice the baby bump and its movement may be felt.

Trimester three, the remaining section of the pregnancy, lasts from week 28 until the delivery of the baby. The fetus experiences more brain development and lung usage, but is really only getting longer and heavier as most other development has occurred. It is throughout this stage that some women may become frustrated as the tiredness that abated during the second trimester returns, pain is felt in the back and abdomen, and more frequent visits to the toilet are required. Other experiences felt during this time include a dropping of the belly and the belly button extruding out.

The most important thing to do while pregnant is to look after yourself. Regular visits to the doctors, relevant scans and blood checks, safe, gentle and regular exercise and proper diet will hopefully ensure that the arrival of your little one is a joyous and love-filled occasion.
