Planning Your Wedding: It's All In The Details
If you're about to get married, your big day occupies most of your thoughts
. No matter how hard to try to think about other topics, little else can truly hold your attention. After all, you're going to be the center of attention throughout the entire event. That's a little bit nerve wracking. Another reason your nuptials consume so much of your time, energy, and attention is that there are so many details to oversee and never enough time for them all. From the moment you say yes to the ring, you're behind schedule. Experts will say a year is minimal for planning a wedding. But talk to any harried bride-to-be and she'll tell you that there's never enough time-no matter how much time you have!
As soon as you don that engagement ring, you begin making decisions and plans. There are attendants to secure and dates to set. Invitations must be selected and ordered well in advance. There are decisions to be made regarding style and theme. There are aisles of gowns to try on before you find "the one." There are gifts to pick out and registries to fill. You also have to haggle with your fianc about which officiate will perform the ceremony. And if that doesn't dissolve the two of you into a knock-down-drag-out feud, then you can start planning a honeymoon.
Just the ceremony has a million little details to settle on. Will you write your own vows or go traditional? What readings do you want to share with your guests? Do you want a program for the ceremony? Which songs would you like to have played?
You need to determine where you want to have your ceremony. Some couples opt to hold their ceremony in their home church. But other couples take the show on the road. Perhaps you'll need a larger venue due to the number of guests you will have. Or perhaps your regular place of worship is quite large and your wedding will be more intimate. Smaller nuptials can get lost in an enormous space. Contracting with a photographer is a huge piece of the planning. But this will likely lead you to realize all of the decisions you have yet to make.
The decisions don't end with the ceremony. The reception planning is an entirely new set of decisions and choices. It's easy to get overwhelmed and frazzled. Take a deep breath and start taking the decisions one at a time. Start by narrowing down the spot for your reception. That decision will cause a lot of the others to fall in line like dominos. Your reception venue will influence your theme, decorations, music, and number of guests. There is still food, wedding favors, flowers, and the song for your first dance to select. This may be a good place to enlist the help of a close friend with excellent taste. Today's couples are expressing their individuality throughout their event. One place to do that is in the favors. If you have a friend who is a bit quirky, enlist her help in finding unique wedding favors. Many couples like to find something special to them as a couple, or their interests to provide as a takeaway for their guests. Another place couples are showing their individuality is the send off. Many couples are opting for confetti or bubbles, but this is another place to get creative.
Planning your marriage is a time-consuming process, but hopefully when the big day rolls around you'll be so pleased you won't be able to imagine it any other way.
