Flights
Long haul flights are not the best places for small children. Your adorable child could be another passenger's nightmare, so unless your child is happy for long periods without making a fuss, it might be best to leave the exotic locations for those years when the children are older.
Flight times are crucial for family holidays abroad. Try to arrange flights that leave and arrive during daylight hours. This could add costs to the holiday, but it's better than being stuck in an airport in the middle of the night. Check how long the transfer time is from the airport to your hotel. If a hotel car can meet you at the airport, arrange it. This is a far better start to your holiday than car hire or coach transfer.
If you are arranging hotel and flights independently, or for
solo holidays, check business class flight prices. There are lots of reasonable prices available on scheduled flights during the day, it just needs a little searching. Once you add taxes, luggage, food and travel costs to for a charter flight from a distant airport, you may discover that the business class price is a good deal.
Beaches and pools.
If you are planning a holiday by the sea and have small children, choose a destination with sandy beaches and a shallow sea, which is easier and safer for paddling and wading. Make sure that you hotel has a heated swimming pool. Many beach resorts do not heat their pools during the summer and the water can be quite cold until the early afternoon.
Organised sports and activities make family holidays more entertaining. These could be water sports, theme parks, adventure trails and kids' clubs. Children need the opportunity to roam around in safety as well as staying amused and occupied.
Health.
If you have older children and are planning an adventure holiday such as a safari or trekking through mountains, choose a location that is malaria free. It's much easier to enjoy a holiday when you don't have to worry about the health risks. Australia, Canada, Japan, Jordan, Morocco, Oman, South Africa, Mauritius and Canada are all malaria free locations.
Plan any necessary vaccinations well in advance.
Pets.
Family pets are sometimes more equal than the human family members, but however much you love your pet, think very carefully before you take it on a holiday abroad. Even on solo holidays when you can give your pet all your attention, you may not be able to guarantee its safety.
Does your holiday destination have suitable facilities for pets? If you are travelling by car, train or ferry, take your pet on holiday only if it is a seasoned traveller. Ensure that it has all vaccinations and its passport in order. Air travel can be very distressful for pets as usually, they must travel in the aircraft hold. If you do take your pet on an aircraft, remember that it should not be sedated at all.
