Paying For The Wedding

A dream wedding costs money

A dream wedding costs money. In the old days, it was the couple's parents that paid for most of the wedding charges. With the rising cost of planning and executing a wedding, couples are deciding to get married at a later point in their life. The changes in the economy and roles have helped alter perceptions on who should pay for the wedding.

In more traditional setup, the bride's family paid for much of the wedding fees. A large part involved paying for the different venues and decorations for the ceremony and reception. The bride's family will also be paying for the food, music and any forms of entertainment during the reception. Beyond the wedding day itself, the bride's family will also pay for the bride's wedding dress and accessories. Invitations, programs and souvenirs as well as reservation for wedding transportation is also part of the wedding budget for the bride's family.

The groom's family has less financial responsibilities. Besides the gift for the couple, one of the aspects they pay for is the rehearsal dinner. Costs that may be incurred include the invitations, reservations for the venue, decorations and entertainment.

Under the traditional wedding budget setup, the bride selects and pays for the wedding ring and gift for the groom. She also has to consider the cost of arrangements for her attendants and bridesmaids. It is the bride's financial responsibility to save and pay for beauty treatments including hair and makeup for the event.

Last but not least is the groom's responsibility. He pays for both the engagement and the wedding ring. In terms of the wedding itself, the groom is responsible for the wedding license, fees for the officiator and the bouquet. The groom also selects and pays for the corsages worn by the mothers and grandmothers for both families during the wedding. He may also need to purchase gifts and accommodations for the male attendants. One of the most important aspects is the honeymoon which the groom plans and pays for.

During more recent times or if the parents were financially unable to contribute for the wedding budget, the couple are the ones responsible for paying for the entire wedding. After announcing their intent to get married, the couple sits down to plan on what needs to be paid for the wedding. An estimate based on the price of the venue, theme, style and other factors are added up. Modern customs require that the couple be more financially responsible for the wedding budget, although they may approach the parents for help. The parents may choose to pay for a significant aspect of the wedding or contribute a specific amount. In cases wherein the parents are unable to contribute enough, the couple will need to revise the wedding budget. Another alternative is to find other ways to pay for the cost of the wedding.

One alternative option that has had appeal is splitting the wedding budget in three equal parts: one for the bride's family, the groom's family and the couple. In exchange, each gets to decide a third of the total number of guests for the wedding.
