There are many medications that women are told unequivocally to avoid during pregnancy. Unfortunately, while Paxil is changing the way serotonin acts in the pregnant woman's brain, it's also changing the way the chemical acts in a developing baby's system. It isn't clear yet just why this is a problem. Some researchers suspect that serotonin has a vital role in the development of a baby's brain while it is still a fetus.
The side effects of Paxil for pregnant women are bad enough, but they can be fatal for developing babies. Birth defects are twice as likely with Paxil as they are with similar medications that have similar functions in the body. Paxil birth defects include problems with the heart and defects of the cranium. Both of these major defects can mean surgeries aplenty for a brand new baby, and they can also carry lifelong consequences with them.

Paxil is no doubt a useful drug for many people struggling with depression.
