PREGNANCY WEIGHT

"Watch what you eat , don't eat for two

, get plenty of exercise and rest." Women often hear this phrases when they are pregnant and it is all to ensure they maintain good weight during pregnancy

For women , substantial weight gain raises the chance of gestational diabetes and preeclampsia, a dangerous condition , involving high blood pressure, as well as the need for cesarean section.

Excess weight gain is not only bad for the mother , it has an adverse effect on the unborn fetuses , too. Although much of medical doctors' focus has been on preventing underweight babies , increasingly, evidences suggest the need for women not to eat for two , in order to maintain the right weight during pregnancy.

Basically ,the recommended maximum weight gain during pregnancy is 25 pounds for women who are already obese, 35 pounds for women in the normal range and 40 pounds for those who are underweight.

Obesity is a major risk factor for several chronic condition , including cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension, cancer , and even arthritis . There is a growing interest in the fetal origin of diseases that occur later in life, including obesity , because it has implications for the woman and the unborn baby.

The implication for the pregnancy is that there is the possibility of the woman developing pregnancy-induced diabetes or gestational diabetes. Gestational diabetes predisposes the woman to developing high blood pressure during pregnancy or preeclampsia

Researchers have been unsure whether the mother's weight gain causes high birth-weight or some genetic factors shared by the mother and baby cause both to gain too much weight . But this study published in the August issue of Lancet journal , it seems to support the thinking of that a woman's weight gain is the factor which triggers her baby's size and not factors as genes .

The researchers found that women who put more than 24 kilograms (53 pounds), during pregnancy were more than two times as likely to have a child that is weighed at least 4 kilograms(8.8 pounds) at birth , compared with women who packed just 8 to 10 kilograms (18 to 22 pounds) while pregnant.

Excessive weight gain in a woman during pregnancy could raise the long term risk of weight related diseases such as asthma, allergies and cancer in her offspring later in life .

If you are under-weight, it should be increased by about 25 percent and if you are over-weight, it should be decreased by the same amount . It is also quite common to notice a cessation of weight gain , perhaps even a slight weight loss at very end of pregnancy.

There is a one-size fits all approach to pregnancy weight gain because weight gain depends on various factors , including the woman's weight before pregnancy. A woman carrying twins or triplets certainly will likely gain more weight .But is no license to eat double her normal amount of food.
