You will also have to decided what exactly you want from the site, are you looking for long term, somebody just to fill a whole in life for a short period of time or just a one night stand. This may sound a bit strange to you if you are just starting down this road of online dating but trust me when I say that there are thousands of internet dating sites catering for every bodies taste. Some are free and some are paid and if you can think of a particular theme or style then there will be a online dating site covering that aspect. So the first rule is research and more research.
After all you don't want to join a internet dating site looking for long term relationship and possible the person of dreams only to discover that is a swingers site and the profile pictures don't leave anything to the imagination.
When you decide to start online dating, you will need to set up a profile, remember to be honest and if you are not sure what to write about yourself ask your friends and family. A couple of tips

Safety first, remember to protect yourself online and a good way to do this is to protect your information. This should include your home phone number, address, workplace or any information relating to your children. Only give out your home phone number when you are sure, the best thing to do first is if you are going to give out a number use a mobile ( a pre pay one) that way you are covered should anything go wrong.
