The question will peek her interest and the compliment will make her smile, its kind of like double baiting your email to ensure a response. Here is an example of a first contact email I will send to her:

Always keep it short, simple and sincere, with no grammar errors or mis-spellings. Do not send really long emails, a beautiful woman is already receiving 30-100 emails per day, so she does not have time to read a really long email.
Next, make sure you chop the email up like I did this one, so its easy to read and one line feeds to the next. Do not send out one big block of text, always break it into small chunks that are easy to digest and read.
Always start with a salutation and her name if she gives it, people love to hear their name more than any other word in the dictionary. In addition, a salutation shows you have manners. You would be surprised how many men miss this online dating tip.
Then, ask a question and tie it in to her profile or picture. The question can be about their profile, pictures, or something in general. Find something unique about her and ask a question about it.
Some of the best questions to ask are, personal open ended questions. Do not ask closed ended questions, they can be answered with yes or no, because they do not involve the woman to think about it, or think about how to answer you.
If you notice she likes to cook, ask her, what kind of food does she like to cook? If she likes to watch TV ask about her favorite show, if she likes country music ask her if she can two step....you get the picture.
Finally, close the short email with a compliment. The compliment must be short, sweet, sincere. If your going to give a compliment, be unique in what you say, the words you use, and what you compliment her about. More than likely, if she is pretty, she receives a lot of compliments, so use different adjectives when you compliment her.
For example, don't say, "nice smile", tell her she has a nice set of pearly whites, or an exquisite smile. Most guys will say the same things, and women will get used to hearing these same compliments and eventually the compliment wont mean a thing when she hears it..
Another way to make your compliment stand out from the crowd, compliment her on something totally off the beaten path. For example, she might have taken some travel photos and posted them on her profile. Let her know how gorgeous you thought her photos were, and ask if she took those pictures herself.
In other words, don't give her the same old compliments. Sometimes you have to change the bait up to get a bite. Most guys, will tell a woman the same things and she will be used to hearing those compliments. However, if you come up with a different compliment, you will be seen as being different, and will be treated different.
