New York Knicks Tickets - Early Assessment
The New York Knicks are probably a long shot to make the playoffs this season
, but that doesn't mean that there aren't plenty of reasons to grab some New York Knicks tickets and catch a game. Everyone in the basketball world knows that the Knicks have their eyes set on next summer, when guys like LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, among others, can become free agents. The Knicks have gone to great lengths to free up salary cap space in order to land at least one big name in the summer of 2010.
While the Knicks do have a number of expiring contracts, which in most cases means players that will not be back in a New York uniform next season, there are some intriguing players to watch. David Lee wanted a long-term deal this past offseason, but was unable to secure one and settled for a one-year contract. That doesn't mean he's gone after this season, though. If the Knicks don't have cap room to land two big names this summer, or if they're simply unable to, Lee could receive the long-term deal he was seeking this past summer.
Lee is the Knicks' best player right now and it would be foolish for the team to let him go if they didn't have to. He's great in the pick-and-roll, a major part in head coach Mike D'Antoni's offensive system, and is one of the best rebounders in the league. He's somewhat limited offensively, but he's undoubtedly a valuable player.
The crown jewel of the franchise right now is small forward Danilo Gallinari. Gallinari is a D'Antoni favorite and the team selected him with the sixth overall pick in the 2008 draft over guys like Eric Gordon and Brook Lopez. Gallinari spent most of last season sidelined with a back injury, but he's looked sharp this season. He's already had a 30-point game and has been a dead-eye from three-point range. He might take a few too many threes right now, but he's bound to settle down as what is essentially his rookie season moves forward. Gallinari could be a big part of luring a major free agent next summer, as players could be attracted to playing with such a sweet shooter.
Another player that could help recruit some big free agents is rookie Toney Douglas. Douglas didn't see much action in the first week of the season, but he received major minutes on Nov. 9 and 11 and scored 21 and 23 points in those contests, respectively. Douglas is a tenacious defender and gives it his all on the court. He's an undersized two who could learn to play the point, but he should be a valuable player either way. If he shines this season, it could go a long way to convincing free agents that this team has a real future thanks to its young talent.
Jordan Hill, the team's lottery pick in 2009, has not shined early in his rookie season, but it's not time to discount him by any means. He's still working on adjusting to the NBA game, but D'Antoni has said that he's close to being ready for some significant playing time. Hill did put up seven points and six rebounds in 13 minutes on Nov. 7, which is encouraging.
Just because the Knicks are going to have their struggles this season doesn't mean that this team is without exciting young talent that any fan would like to watch. The franchise has its eyes set on the summer, but they've also got an eye on the aforementioned players on their roster, as do the prospective free agents.
