Navy Housing Options
When someone joins the navy, they may be transferred to a new state where their skills or specialty may be needed
. This could displace the military men and women and their family away from their original home. For some people in the navy, moves are likely to happen frequently. This could make housing difficult, regardless of their marital status. Having to move all of your belongings, as many know, is difficult, and having to find a new home in a short amount of can be challenging. Fortunately, the military makes such transitions a little easier by giving them several navy housing options.
Navy housing depends on the person's family status as well as their status in the military. If they are single, have no dependents, and are privates or specialists, they will most likely be housed on base in a building called the barracks. The barracks have a dormitory style to them, where each person has their own room but share a kitchen and bathroom. In the navy, these may not be on a base, but on a ship instead. Once a single person with no dependents move up from a specialist into a sergeant, more housing options become available. Most have to still live on base, but are able to have their own bathroom and bedroom. However, some sergeant classes are able to request to live off base or, if they are on ship, off of the ship.
On the other hand, there are some Navy men and women that are married or have dependents. If this is the case, Navy housing includes living on as well as off base. Most bases will have homes for married couples and families. These homes vary in size, depending on what level the military person is as well as how many children they may have. If the military person is married but has no children and is a private or specialist, they will have housing is smaller. Most of these housing for military people at this level are similar to a town home style. Once they move up in status, they are able to have larger and better housing on base.

Both of these allowances depend on the status, but is likely to be enough to cover any rent, mortgages, or housing payments. Furthermore, military people are able to receive allowances for every child.
The reason that the military assists married men and women or those with children is because, as previously stated, military people may need to move often to different bases. If their spouses and children stay with them, it can be difficult for several reasons. For spouses, frequent moving means that it is difficult to keep a well paying job. The housing and food allowances account for this issue. Children may also have a difficult time transitioning because it means changing schools, leaving friends, and going to a place that they may not know.
The Navy, and the other branches of the military, account for this and assist through their housing referral services, or HRS. The HRS can assist in selling a home that may have been purchased, finding a new home to buy or rent, and also helps pay to move all of a family's belongings. Along with on and off base housing options, there are also community, government and privatized housing near most of the bases. They also can assist with mortgages or finding housing loans.
