Natural Skin Care

Skin care is not something new as it has been in practice since ancient times

, when herbal skin care was probably the only way to take care of skin. The use of synthetic products was something that was bound to occur when chemists started experimenting and mass production became available. Unfortunately many of these natural formulas where never written down as they were handed down by word of mouth so only a small number remain, there are even people that have never use a herbal product.

Whilst we can blame large companies for supplying us with skin care products relatively inexpensively, part of the problem has been our own reluctance to do things for ourselves. Of course commercial skin care manufacturers now mass produce herbal skin care products but because they would not last long in storage, they are obliged to add a preservative which unfortunately means they are not as good as thos you make in your own home.

The true natural, herbal market is not dead though and a growing number of traditionalists have started up herbal skin care production to feed the desire of many people to have real, natural products. But still, as no-one wants to make them at home, the commercial market of herbal skin care products is on the rise but what are these herbs or herbal skin care mechanisms?

The most famous is probably aloe vera which is extracted from an aloe plant and is very effective at treating sunburn and other skin problems including cuts; in fresh form it is a natural skin hydrating compound. Other household herbs like dandelion, chamomile, lime flowers and rosemary are good at cleansing but usually when they are in combination with other herbs.

To protect from infection and help the skin, the herbs lavender, marigold, thyme and fennel can be used, all of which have antiseptic properties. Even tea can be used to help treat skin that has been damaged by to much uv radiation when formulated into a herbal skin care product.

Herbal extracts can also be used in the form of oils like tea tree oil, lavender oil and primrose oil which are the more popular of herbal skin care products.Even skin complaints such as eczema and psoriasis can use herbal oils to relieve the discomfort as well as others that are used in bath products because they re-hydrate the skin.

Obviously the greatest benefit of using natural products is there is hardly ever any reaction to their use, something that the synthetic products cannot claim. If you can afford it then genuine herbal skin care products are the way to go but you will find there are occasions when only synthetic products which have been clinically tested will do.

Whatever type of skin care you choose remember that your skin is the main barrier to the elements and must as a necessity be in good condition and needs to be looked after.
