Men's Style Options With Sweaters
A sweater is an indispensable style item in just about any season
. You could wear one as is for a cool summer evening, or use the same one as a layering item for truly cruel winter days. But even a group that sounds as basic as sweaters has more to it than meets the eye. They may all look similar, it's true, yet every type has a respective character that every fashion-conscious guy should think about.
Sweater Fashion ABC's
Different folks have different strokes especially when it comes to fashion, but there are certain sweaters that you can find on virtually anyone. Whether it's your style-oblivious sexagenarian dad or your GQ-reading metrosexual teenage nephew, these sweaters are the classic style pieces any man can wear, and should be wearing.
Crewneck sweaters are the perfect style choices for days when you want a little extra warmth from layering but don't want too much added bulk for the day. The cashmere or cotton varieties, however, can be worn alone, without anything else underneath, for just lounging around the house. You can create a laid-back look with a pair of jeans, or dress up your style with flannel pants in one of the classic formal colors.
Slightly more difficult to pull off style-wise is the v-neck sweater. It's a favorite with the fashion crowd, though, because that little peek it allows at the neck gives you the chance to harmonize your sweater with what's underneath it. As long as you have a fairly good idea of what will look good as a base layer, a crisp white shirt, for example, the v-neck is an excellent choice.
The Next Level of Sweaters
If you're the kind of guy who's comfortable enough with men's fashion to play around with textures, cable-knits make for a great starting point in the sweater department. Like corduroy, the subtle textures add interest to the otherwise humble sweater, without getting to the point of being loud or brash. Worn with office pants, a necktie and a shirt, it's a style piece you can bring to the office, too.
Turtlenecks are invaluable to the fashion-conscious man's wardrobe especially in winter, as it's one of the single style pieces you could have that gives the most coverage. Opt for a knit version of the classic design instead of the lower-priced jersey ones you'll find in a lot of men's boutiques. You may end up paying more, but it'll be more flattering to your figure as well, regardless of what your figure might be.
Cardigans and fisherman sweaters tend to give people all the wrong ideas related to old tradesmen and doddering university professors. The updated versions with their sleeker lines and slimmer silhouettes, though, are as fashion show-ready as anything. A fitted piece can function about as well as a tailored jacket, only it'll be much more comfortable, and you won't have to bother with coat checks anymore.
Styling Sweaters
From a practical fashion point of view, there really aren't very many strict rules governing what you can and can't wear with sweaters. They're like the little siblings of the blazer, giving you an extra layer of warmth. A sweater is just as versatile as the latter, only you trade in rigid formality for something that's a little more wearable.
More classic style pieces like a cashmere crew-neck sweater can, in fact, be worn outside the house. Wear them with slacks that have some interest to them, salt and pepper ones usually work great, a shirt and a necktie, and you've got a look that's just the right parts formal for the office or classroom. The same goes for other varieties like the cardigan, so long as you pick them out while keeping the rules of the blazers in mind.
Sweaters present yet another case where men's fashion can coincide with comfort. These things are really cushy, meant to be lain around in and make the chilliest evenings toasty.
