A new research study from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston shows that nearly one in four women who are overweight think that their weight is in the "normal" range.

According to Dr. Mahbur Rahman, the fact that people, especially women, can misperceive their body weight so frequently is alarming, and highlights that both more work needs to be done at a public health level to give individuals the tools they need to assess their bodyweight and health, along with increased awareness of doctors to check their patients more frequently.

Obtaining body mass index information from the medical charts of over 2,000 adult women the study will appear in the December issue of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Each female was then questioned about their weight, and their general living habits such as use of diet pills, diuretics, weight control pills, smoking, or skipping meals.

For the study the standard definitions of normal, overweight, and obese were used; for example a BMI below 25 was considered normal, 25-29 was considered overweight, and 30 and higher was considered obese.

The researchers found that one in four women were unable to accurately choose their weight. Additionally the researchers found that those that were unable to accurately choose their weight also were more likely to take part in bad dieting behaviors, such as skip meals, use diet pills when they wanted to change their weight.

According to Dr. Rahman, the trend of increasing weight in America is making more people feel that their current weight, even though it is too heavy, is okay. With over 60% of Americans overweight, being fat is the new normal, according to Dr. Rahman. Unfortunately the health complications that come along with being overweight is not going away. People are still at a much higher risk of developing diabetes, heart disease, and other medical complications.

From this research, Dr. Rahman suggests that individuals should learn about how to watch their weight and know what is healthy for their individual height. Additionally doctors should make sure to educate people on what is healthy and that through lifestyle change a healthy weight can be achieved.
