In an era that was characterized by stalwarts of Indian film industry such as Dilip Kumar, Meena Kumari, Dev Anand and Nargis and many others, Madhubala created a space for herself on Indian cinema with her slender beauty and vivacious charm.
Born in to a Muslim household who lived in Afghanistan, she had strong affection towards her father until 1969, when she passed away. This strong affinity proved tough to handle during her acting tenure however never did she repent. Although, she could not continue her acting career for a long time, Madhubala certainly made it big in the Hindi film industry.
Madhubala, born in Delhi in the year 1933, was christened Mumtaz Jahan Begum Dehlavi. However, people recognize her with her screen name and not with actual name. Her first screen entry was at the age of nine and she tasted success quickly at 16 years of age with her stunning performance in the evergreen movie "Mahal".
Even though she was paired against Ashok Kumar who was a well established 'star' at this point, Madhubala not just performed well but also won critical acclaim for her captivating performance in a role that was considered tough to assay. Some scenes and songs of this classic suspense-thriller movie are played in numerous families in India even today.
Madhubala's health was deteriorating within a few years into her acting career, due to heart problem. However she continued working for a long time and she always wished for better roles, fame and critical appreciation. In fact she did not tell the public about her ailment and kept on working until she felt uneasy during a shooting for a new film. Surprisingly, her good co-workers in the film industry were also not aware of the heart ailment, Madhubala was going through.
While critics and media hinted that Madhubala's attractiveness outmatched her talent, her co-workers disagreed firmly. Actor Dilip Kumar, known for his romantic association with Madhubala, said that her potential wasn't completely uncovered. He believed her as the greatest actress ever in Hindi cinema.
There was many pressure to save more money to take care of her poor family and this led to the selection of many bad movies and roles in her career. However, a few of her films like Mughal-E-Azam are considered to be blockbusters due to her presence and liked by people even today. Madhubala never got to perform in an English film even though film director Frank Capra tried his best to talk about such a chance with her. Nonetheless, she achieved international fame through Theatre Arts magazine that called her as the biggest star in the world.
