We all try to diet at one point or another, we either don't eat, drink lots of liquids, or go crazy on the treadmill the morning after we just gorged ourselves on a double-cheeseburger the night before. These things normally lead to a decent amount of weight lost. But it's not sustainable.

A low to no carb diet requires a substantial change in food quantity consumed and is usually hard to keep up with, and requires a whole lot of discipline to maintain.

In theory, low to no carb diets limit insulin production, which in turn prompts the body to burn stored fat instead of sugar used for energy. The lower the insulin level, the more you burn stored fat for energy. Even with that, some research stillsuggests that any weight loss from a low-carb diet probably isn't related to blood sugar or insulin levels.

Carbohydrates are normally found in fruits, grains, dairy products,vegetables and legumes (beans and peas).A low to no carb diet focuses on fish, meat, egggs, poultry, and some nonstarchy vegetables. A low to no carb diet limits most grains, beans, fruits, breads, sweets, pastas and starchy vegetables. Some plans allow fruits, vegetables and whole grains. A daily limit of 50 to 150 grams of carbohydrates is typical.

The reason a low to no carb diet may work at first is because limiting carb intake tends to have a diuretic (water loss) effect in your body and an increased feeling of fullness because with limited carb intake you now mostly have a diet that is high in fat and protein. The reason this does not work in the long term is because it requires a commitment to be able to eat the same kinds of foods permanently, that is if you don't suffer any side effects in the long run.

The best kind of sustainable diet is one that is based on lean sources of protein, whole grains, fruits and vegetables. What makes this sustainable is that it can actually give you that "satisfied" feeling after you've eaten, which makes it easier to keep up with.
