Does Your Metabolism Really Impact On Your Weight And General Health
?
Crash diets, prolonged fasting, consuming products laden with sugar, living a sedentary life, as well as under active thyroid glands are all cited as causes of low metabolism. Fasting and crash diets, however, are often the most common causes of low metabolism as the sudden decrease in calorie intake leads the body to store more fat and burn fat at a much slower rate, as part of the system's natural survival mechanism. Crash diets, prolonged fasting, living a sedentary life- these can all make it very difficult to increase metabolism.
The question is, does it actually matter? Many would argue that it does, claiming that low metabolism is the main cause of a number of significant health related problems. For example, low metabolism is often cited as the main cause of childhood obesity a problem that some allege can't be solved with exercises or diets. Others argue that it is a significant contributing factor to clogging of the arteries. It is generally agreed that low metabolism is not confined to a handful of people. Back in the 50's about 10% of our population were dealing with this challenge. Aside from the obvious health dangers, this group is also likely to experience ongoing low energy, which can have a significant impact on quality of life and a sense of general well-being.
Low metabolism is a result of not overloading the body. The body adapts to the lack of energy use. So what can you do about it? Well, you could start with some old fashioned common sense. How many times when growing up were you told to eat breakfast? The rationale behind that advice is that if you don't eat breakfast your body may go into starvation mode - causing your metabolism to slow. (Not eating breakfast is also bad for your blood sugar but that's another story).
Health and fitness specialists these days often advise eating 5 smaller meals a day over 3 big meals so that you are continuously giving your metabolism a little kick start throughout the day. Others recommend eating breakfast, lunch and dinner at the same time every day, as constantly skipping meals can throw your body into chaos. However if you eat at the same times of day then your body knows when to expect the next supply of calories and will start burning off most, if not all of the calories it takes in.
