Forget about supplements. They are expensive and ineffective when it comes to sustainable weight loss. If you want to keep the weight off long term, relying on a pill is only going to hurt you in the long run. Most of them are just high doses of caffeine and laxatives. The same goes for prepackaged diet meals and snacks. They are usually more expensive and offer no value besides controlling portions, something you could do easily do yourself using plastic baggies and containers at home.
Be wary of 'low-fat', 'sugar-free', or 'diet' labels on packages. When an item is described using any of those phrases, it often contains artificial sweeteners, which some studies suggest can actually increase your appetite. When people see these labels, they wrongly assume they can eat the food in greater quantities, so they end up consuming more overall calories than they would if they'd just satisfied their craving for the 'real' version of whatever diet product they spent more money on.
When you're trying to eat better, health food stores are going to offer you a larger variety of healthy alternatives to your favorite foods than your average grocery store. If you choose to shop at these specialty health stores, consider signing up for any awards program or membership they offer and cut coupons regularly to save even more. Shopping at health food stores is not entirely necessary when trying to eat right. Fortunately, mega-stores are now catching onto the organic, whole-grain, 'natural' bandwagon and more healthy food seems to be popping up on shelves each month. Keep your eyes open the next time you go shopping.
Taking advantage of specials is also a great way to save money and try new products and produce. If you're unfamiliar with a fruit or vegetable on sale, buy it anyways and find a recipe to incorporate it into once you get home. Doing this will make it easier to familiarize yourself with food your diet may have been lacking before and can even be fun. Ask a store attendant for help or suggestions too; they are usually an excellent source of information and cooking ideas, especially at health food stores. Also try buying nonperishable foods in bulk, stocking up on sale items, and freezing your favorite bread when it goes on special.
If you've decided to lose weight, joining a gym often seems like the next step in your weight loss journey, but it doesn't have to be. Be honest with yourself. Have you paid an expensive gym membership before and never really utilized it enough to get any value from it? If you know you're someone who dreads going to the gym, then don't join one. There are so many other ways to exercise that don't involve throwing your money away each month and feeling guilty each time you skip a workout. Consider going for walks, jogs, doing exercise videos, or just getting some yard work done. It can really be anything; it only has to be something you enjoy and that you'll stick with. If you can't workout outside where you live, consider investing in a treadmill or other equipment to use at home. It's better to buy one piece of equipment you like than to pay to use twenty you don't enjoy at your local gym.
The next time you go to the store, avoid the diet isles. Most of their products are wastes of money. Be smart. Portion out your food yourself when you get home. Take advantage of deals and experiment with new produce regularly. Don't force yourself to go to the gym. Work out on your own terms and save money doing it.
