The Gilmore Girls was a long-running comedy and drama that focused on the lives of
a single mother and her daughter, the high points and low points of their relationship and their relationship with the girl's grandparents.
Lorelai is the young mother of a teenage daughter (Rory). She discovered she was pregnant at the age of 16. This way very upsetting to her parents as they had plans for her to attend an ivy league school, marry a wealthy man and live in high society. Lorelai left home when her baby was only a year old and she was herself still only a teenager. She worked as a maid in an inn. Over the years she worked her way up to manager and eventually opened (with the help of some friends) an inn of her own.
Lorelai had very little contact with her parents until Rory was a teenager. The family did begin having some regular family dinners at that point, though they were strained.
Lorelai's relationship with her daughter Rory is the main focus of the series. Though they are mostly the best of friends, Lorelai is determined not to let Rory repeat the mistakes that she made and this does cause some stress. The mother and daughter's relationship with the grandparents is far more dramatic. Since they never really forgave Lorelai for getting pregnant and ruining their plans for her, they resent her just as she does them. Rory is simply caught in the middle of their ongoing problems.
