Lifting Heavy Weights Is Not Necessary

Lighter weights may be even more effective, providing you lift them to fatigue according to new research from McMaster University in Canada. Lifting heavy weights at the gym has long been heralded as the only way to increase muscle strength, tone body parts, and help burn body fat. Now research shows that this is not the case; in fact lighter weights for more repetitions may actually not only be comparable, but better for fat burning!

At McMaster University in Ontario Canada, a group of exercise physiologist took volunteers and on two separate occasions had them either lift lighter weights (about 30% of their maximum) until they could no longer lift the weight safely, a process they called "voluntary fatigue;" and then the researchers measured the increase in metabolism of both burning fat and building new muscle. On a separate occasion the same individuals came into the laboratory and repeated the experiment except this time they lifted 90% of their maximum until "voluntary fatigue." The results were the same for building new muscle, and the fat burning was actually increased with the lighter weights!

According to study coordinator Mark Tarnolpolsky MD, the results have enormous implications for people looking to lose weight as part of an exercise program. "Because our results show you can achieve the same amount of muscle building with an increase in fat metabolism by lifting lighter weights to voluntary failure, people that are not interested in lifting heavy weights or that are more interested in burning fat for energy should be encouraged to do so with lighter weights at the gym."

The research is also good news for anyone that may not have an exercise partner, or are scared of possibly injuring themselves while weight training. The American College of Sports Medicine points out that most weightlifting injuries happen within the first few weeks of starting an exercise program and especially when individuals try to increase the amount of weight lifted too quickly.

Overall this research comes at time when more and more people are starting to think about New Years resolutions with the impending Holiday Season approaching. With weight loss as a primary interest of many people during the New Year, knowing that research supports lighter weights with higher repetitions for the same, and possibly better results for people interested in weight loss, as heavy weights. This research should come as good news.
