Learn How To Make A Beautiful Glass Box
Making stained glass boxes from scratch is a fun and affordable hobby
. It also leaves you with a great gift or box to use in your own home. You'll be able to store all sorts of little things or big (depending on how big you make the box) in these boxes. They can really look beautiful if done right!
Depending on how much work you want to put into making the box, they can be customized in different ways. You can make these boxes in all different sizes, shapes and colors. Obviously the time you put into production will vary, but you can make a pretty stained glass box in one hour for something on the simple side.
In order to start this project, you'll obviously need a flat piece of glass to cut your shapes. It can either be glass or a mirror and it can even be colored if you want to use stained glass. With the proper tool to cut glass, you'll need to cut the bottom of your box first. This can be square or rectangle. Depending on how big you want the box, cut your bottom piece accordingly.
After the first cut, you'll proceed with cutting the sides of the box. These pieces will determine how deep the box will be. Make sure these pieces are cut the same length as the bottom, but remember that these pieces will stand up.
At this point you'll need to cut out the ends of the box. It's extremely important that these pieces match up with the width of the bottom piece of glass. Don't forget that since these two pieces will be the ends of the box, they'll stand on the bottom glass. So to make sure they fit right, measure the thickness of the bottom glass and subtract that from these pieces. And the final pieces to cut are the top pieces that will cover the box.
Once all the glass is cut you'll need to smooth down the edges. When you cut the glass, it will come out pretty rough so a proper glass grinder is a must have. Once they're smooth and the glass looks spiffy it's time to add the glue. Make sure you find proper glue from a specialty store that's meant for glass.
This part can get very messy, so make sure to focus on keeping it real clean. The glue should always be dabbled onto the side of the glass. If it gets messy, clean it right away before it dries up. It's best to use a damp q-tip for this. The top should not go onto the box until everything has dried up and its feeling well put together.
You'll soon become intrigued with this fun hobby and get better as time passes. Feel free to use any colors or designs when making these boxes. They're meant to be fun and it's a great way to express your style!
